A furniture-moving estimate is most useful when it starts with the actual pieces and the route they must take. A sofa moving between nearby apartments can present a different job from a whole-house move or a piano relocation.
Build an item list
List the furniture, approximate dimensions, and any fragile surfaces or removable parts. Photograph unusually large pieces and note whether they may need disassembly. Tell the mover about antiques, glass, marble, or other items needing special handling.
Check access at both properties
Measure doorways, stair turns, and elevators. Ask the building about loading hours, elevator reservations, and paperwork. Include the distance between the truck and the entrance when discussing the job.
Confirm what the estimate includes
Ask about furniture protection, disassembly and reassembly, loading, transport, placement, and any packing materials. Explain whether you need a single-item move, an in-house move, or transportation to another address. Ask which valuation terms apply and keep the estimate in writing.
Plan any specialty handling or storage
Pianos and other unusually heavy or delicate pieces deserve a specific discussion with the moving team. If your new home will not be ready, ask how storage and later delivery would be arranged.
